Dr. José Crispín, Researcher at the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán(INCMNSZ) in Mexico City, received the 2017 Mary Betty Stevens, MD, Young Investigador Prize.  The prize is given annually in recognition of the exceptional achievements of an investigator in the early part of his or her career in lupus research.  Dr. Crispín is a rheumatologist devoted to understanding the development of systemic lupus erythematosus. After completing his postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University in 2009, Dr. Crispín returned to Mexico to establish a lupus research unit at the Department of Immunology and Rheumatology at INCMNSZ. Today, more than 3,500 patients with SLE are being treated by Dr. CrispÍn and his staff. He currently cares for a diverse population of people with lupus which has allowed him to develop a comprehensive research program, focusing on genetics and response to drug treatment options. . The unit has been awarded six grants worth approximately $750,000 USD from Mexico’s federal funding agency and is considered to be the main research center for lupus in the entire county. Within a very short amount of time, he has been able receive huge federal grant support and established a sizeable group of productive students and fellows to work in his unit. We look forward to seeing Dr. Crispin’s research continue to grow in this new Lupus Center of Excellence and help improve the quality of life for people with lupus.
